The Consensus Pen

The Consensus Pen is a standard ballpoint writing instrument augmented with an embedded distributed ledger and three validator nodes (located in the pen cap, the clip, and a small dongle that must remain within Bluetooth range). Before any character is committed to paper, the intended glyph is broadcast to all three validators for approval.

Writing requires 51% validator consensus. With three validators, this means at least two must agree. In testing, validators agreed on 99.3% of characters immediately. The remaining 0.7% involved disputed ligatures and one incident involving the letter Q, which required a manual override and a 40-minute inter-validator reconciliation session.

How Writing Works

  • Step 1 — Intent Capture: Pressure sensor in the nib detects that writing is being attempted. The intended character is inferred from motion tracking (accelerometer, gyroscope). Accuracy: 94.7% on standard Latin characters; 61% on cursive.
  • Step 2 — Proposal: Inferred character is broadcast to all three validators via BLE. Each validator independently validates the glyph against the Unicode 15.1 character set and DQE Handwriting Policy v2.3.
  • Step 3 — Consensus Round: Validators vote. Simple majority (2 of 3) required. Consensus achieved: ink released. Consensus failed: ink withheld, user notified via haptic feedback (one long buzz).
  • Step 4 — Commit: Character hash appended to the immutable pen ledger. Cannot be erased. Crossing out a word creates a new entry marked STRIKETHROUGH, which remains on-chain permanently.

Offline Mode

When validators are out of range, the pen enters Offline Mode. Characters are buffered locally in the pen body (capacity: 512 glyphs). Ink is withheld until connectivity is restored and buffered characters receive retroactive consensus. Upon reconnection, a sync event is triggered. If any buffered character fails retroactive consensus, the user is notified that those characters are "ledger-invalid" and should be physically crossed out, which will itself be logged.

  • Average throughput: 4.1 characters per minute (vs. ~200/min for legacy pen)
  • Ledger storage: 2MB onboard; syncs to DQE Ledger Cloud monthly (Form DQE-CP-SYNC required)

Compliance Notes

  • All writing sessions are logged and tamper-evident; legal documents signed with the Consensus Pen carry a DQE Certificate of Ledger Integrity (Form DQE-CP-CERT)
  • Signatures require an additional "Signature Mode" unlock via Form DQE-CP-SIG and a 24-hour processing window
  • Pen ledger may be subpoenaed; the Department assumes no responsibility for the contents of your immutable writing history
