Sharded Ceiling Fan

The Sharded Ceiling Fan reimagines circulating air as a horizontally partitioned data plane. What was once a thoughtless household action is now a fully governed workflow with audit trails, quarterly reviews, and a dedicated on-call rotation.

To operate the device, users submit a AirflowMandate to the control plane, which validates the request against departmental policy before scheduling execution. Users must also consult the hash ring to determine which sixteenth of the device to use. This is documented, and therefore acceptable.

Architecture

  • consistent-hash-ring: Validates every incoming AirflowMandate against policy; rejections are final but appealable in writing.
  • rebalancing-migration-crew: Coordinates the 9-component control plane; quorum required for all state changes.
  • hot-shard-detector: Publishes health status to 4,929 telemetry series and a wall-mounted dashboard no one watches.

Operational Characteristics

  • Emits 4,929 distinct telemetry series; three are believed to be meaningful
  • Disaster recovery: full state restoration in under 51 hours, assuming the runbook can be located
  • P50 time-to-outcome: 2 min; P99: 26 min — a 4,608% governance premium over the legacy device, well within tolerance
  • Compliance: self-certified against DQE-STD-217, a standard the Department authored for this purpose
